A recent report from TeleGeography highlighted the plummeting vacancy rates for colocation providers in major markets, and while Portland may not be considered a ‘major’ market (and we like it that way by the way), we are seeing demand increase. And it makes sense! In fact colocation provides a host of benefits for small to mid-sized companies, not the least of which is cost savings, so perhaps our title is best phrased ‘because’ of the economy and not ‘despite’ it. Here’s an excerpt from the report…

In the burgeoning secondary market of Seattle, where retail colocation vacancy rates are less than 20 percent, 80 percent of respondents indicated plans for further expansion. “It’s unlikely that the pace of expansion will slow anytime soon,” noted TeleGeography analyst Jon Hjembo. “While operators are adding capacity, vacancy rates in a number of metro markets we surveyed remain under 25 percent.”

We actually saw this coming a while back, and invested $410,000 to expand our colocation hosting capacity by 50 percent. We bulked up our facility cooling, redundancy and back-up generator capacity as well so we’re prepared to handle the increasing density that new technologies are also providing.
